Project objective

The project objective is the rehabilitation of coppice Hungarian oak (Quercus frainetto) and Holm oak (Quercus ilex) forests to high forests. The project was implemented by the Holy Community of Mount Athos (Beneficiary) in cooperation with the Greek Biotope / Wetland Centre which, as partner, has the scientific coordination of the project. Its duration was from 2003 to 2006 and its budget is 1,942,000 .

Holm oak forests cover more than 5,621 ha from sea level to 1,100 m mainly in the eastern part of Athos peninsula. Hungarian oak forests cover more than 1,014 ha from 100 m a.s.l. to 1,400 m mainly in the eastern part of Athos peninsula. The oak forests will be rehabilitated through selective-inversion thinnings an ecologically sound method for Mount Athos.
