Project description

The Forest Service of Kavala and the Regional Fund of East Macedonia and Thrace in collaboration with the Greek Biotope / Wetland Centre (EKBY) implements the “Restoration and environmental interpretation of the riparian forest of Nestos Delta” project. The project is designed to protect the remaining of the natural forest, to restore vegetation, to demonstrate its values and promote sustainable tourism in the area. The project is co-financed by the EEA EFTA States, Financial Instrument of the European Economic Area (75%) and the Hellenic Ministry of Economy Competitiveness and Shipping (25%).
The project intends to restore the formerly famous forest of Nestos. It will assist the riparian forest to regroup and offer freely its goods and become the source of life for local communities which have chosen to live by the running waters of on of the longest rivers in Greece.

Project milestones

  • Restoration of natural vegetation of 280 ha behind the existing embankments
  • Integrated forest management
  • Installation of a monitoring system for the natural environment
  • Environmental interpretation infrastructure for information, education and recreation purposes

It is an integrated project comprising specific work packages and concluded at 31 December 2009.
